Logan, the commander-in-chief of the Union veterans’ group known as the Grand Army of the Republic, decreed that May 30 should become a nationwide day of commemoration for the soldiers killed in the ended Civil War.

In 1971, Congress declared Memorial Day a national holiday. When the day was first observed as Decoration Day, it was only used to recognize those killed in the Civil War, not in any other American conflict. After World War I it expanded the meaning of the holiday, recognizing members of the military killed in any war.

If you have a flag pole in your front yard, remember to fly it Half-staff because we want to honor fallen soldiers, and should remain at half-staff until noon.

N-Watchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14410536082173049505noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23196330.post-61379199023026258572022-12-25T07:22:00.002-05:002022-12-25T09:59:24.625-05:00I heard the Bells on Christmas Day!
Longfellow wrote the poem on Christmas Day in 1863. Then in 1863, during the American Civil War, Longfellow's oldest son, Charles Appleton Longfellow, joined the Union Army without his father's blessing. Longfellow was informed by a letter dated March 14, 1863, after Charles had left. "I have tried hard to resist the temptation of going without your leave but I cannot any longer", he wrote. "I feel it to be my first duty to do what I can for my country and I would willingly lay down my life for it if it would be of any good." Charles was soon appointed as a lieutenant but, in November, he was severely wounded in the Battle of Mine Run. Earth and
heaven are made to overlap with one another, not fitfully, mysteriously
and partially as they do at the moment, but completely, gloriously
and utterly. 'The earth shall be filled with the glory of God as the
waters cover the sea.' That is the promise which resonates throughout
the Bible story, from Isaiah, and behind him, by implication, from
Genesis itself, all the way through to Paul's greatest visionary moments
and the final chapters of the book of Revelation. The great drama
will end, not with 'saved souls' being snatched up into heaven, away
from the wicked earth and the mortal bodies which have dragged
them down into sin, but with the New Jerusalem coming down
from heaven to earth, so that 'the dwelling of God is with humans'
(Revelation 21.3)

A little over a hundred years ago, an American pastor in upstate
New York celebrated in a great hymn both the beauty of creation and
the presence of the creator God within it. His name was Maltbie
Babcock, and his hymn 'This is my Father's World' points beyond the
present beauty of creation, through the mess and tragedy with which
it has been infected, to the ultimate resolution. There are different
versions of the relevant stanza, but this one is the clearest:

This is my Father's world; 0 let me ne'er forget
That though the wrong seems oft so strong,
God is the ruler yet.
This is my Father's world; The battle is not done;
Jesus, who died, shall be satisfied,
And earth and heaven be one.

From: Simply Christian by Tom Wright, pp 186-187

N-Watchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14410536082173049505noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23196330.post-88337095004671821012020-12-21T07:03:00.002-05:002022-03-31T07:15:04.947-04:00Christmas Tree History

In Germany, the first Christmas Trees were decorated with edible things, such as gingerbread and gold covered apples.

Then glass makers made special small ornaments similar to some of the decorations used today. In 1605 an unknown German wrote: "At Christmas they set up fir trees in the parlours of Strasbourg and hang thereon roses cut out of many-colored paper, apples, wafers, gold foil, sweets, etc."

At first, a figure of the Baby Jesus was put on the top of the tree. Over time it changed to an angel/fairy that told the shepherds about Jesus, or a star like the Wise Men saw.

The first Christmas Tree in the UK might well have been set-up by Queen Charlotte, the German wife of King George III. In 1800 she had a tree set-up at the Queen’s Lodge in Windsor for a children's party for rich and noble families. CONCLUSION

I started my original investigation as a spiritual skeptic, but after having thoroughly investigated the evidence for the resurrection, I was coming to a startlingly unexpected verdict. One final philosopher named J. P. Moreland—clinched the case for me. "When Jesus was crucified," Moreland told me, "his followers were discouraged and depressed. So they dispersed. The Jesus movement was all but stopped in its tracks. Then, after a short period of time, we see them abandoning their occupations, Re-gathering, and committing themselves to spreading a very specific message—that Jesus Christ was the Messiah of God who died on a cross, returned to life, and was seen alive by them.

"And they were willing to spend the rest of their lives proclaiming this, without any payoff from a human point of view. They faced a life of hardship. They often went without food, slept exposed to the elements, and were ridiculed, beaten, imprisoned. And finally, most of them were executed in torturous ways…For what? For good intentions? No, because they were convinced beyond a shadow of a doubt that they had seen Jesus Christ alive from the dead." Yes, people will die for their religious convictions if they sincerely believe they are true. Religious fanatics have done that throughout history. While they may strongly believe in the tenets of their religion, however, they don't know for a fact whether their faith is based on the truth. They simply cannot know for sure. They can only believe. In stark contrast, the disciples were in the unique position to know for a fact whether Jesus had returned from the dead. They saw him, they touched him, they ate with him. They knew he wasn't a hallucination or a legend. And knowing the truth, they were willing to die for him.

That insight stunned me. The disciples didn't merely believe in the resurrection; they knew whether it was fact or fiction. Had they known it was a lie, they would never have been willing to sacrifice their lives for it. Nobody willingly dies for something that they know is false. They
proclaimed the resurrection to their deaths for one reason alone: they knew it was true.

And based on the historical data I had examined, I became convinced they were right. Combined with the other evidence for Jesus that I describe in my book

The Case for Christ, I concluded that he really is the one and only Son of God, who proved it by rising from the dead.N-Watchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14410536082173049505noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23196330.post-7554040913354296672015-03-29T18:53:00.002-04:002015-03-29T18:53:47.975-04:00Hosanna - Please Deliver Us!

The reason we don't turn to God more often is because at some basic and unconscious level we are not "fully convinced" He is able and willing to move on our behalf.

Being able to admit that to yourself is humbling; it's also the point at which you begin to deal with your lack of faith in God.

Nothing in your life will change until you pray, "Lord, help me. I say things with my lips that I don't follow through in my behavior." Once you begin to pray that way you can start walking through your Bible, rediscovering that "God is able." He's able to provide for you when you're in a wilderness. He's able to defeat the giants that stand in your way. He's able to go through fiery trials with you and bring you out un-harmed. He's able to promote you when you've been overlooked or opposed.

"Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us" (Eph 3:20 NKJV).

Whatever it takes to own the words, "God is able," do it; otherwise you won't be able to pray with confidence. You'll make a few wishes on your knees, but you won't be able to persevere in prayer until you know in your heart of hearts that God is able-and that He's willing! Nothing is too difficult for Him. The first colored electric Christmas lights on outdoor evergreen trees appeared in Denver in 1914. The tradition began thanks to a sick boy bedridden in the top floor of his home. Ten-year-old David Sturgeon couldn't see his family's Christmas tree downstairs, so his grandfather, a pioneering electrician, painted some light bulbs red and green and strung them on a tree outside David's window.

Not only did the lights brighten what would be David's last holiday, but residents throughout the city came by to admire the display. Just as David's innovative grandfather brought light into the boy's dark times and joy to the whole community, God revealed the true light by sending Jesus into our dark world. For "the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it" (John 1:5, NRSV).
-The Newsletter
Merry Christmas!!!
